History

A majority of the Indian community hails from the former French colonies in India (i.e. Pondicherry, Mahé, Yanam, Karaikal and Chandranagore). Later arrivals were mostly Gujaratis from other Francophone areas, namely Mauritius, Seychelles and Madagascar.

A majority are engaged in small businesses. About 12,000 are in the French government service, while another 6,000 are in the police and armed forces. Most of the Indians are middle class. With France opening up the IT sector for Indian professionals, there could be an influx of Indians coming to France over the coming years.
